When we were invited to attend the grand opening of the new waterpark at Discovery Parks – Maidens Inn Moama, it was a no brainer for us. We would be there with bells on! Who doesn’t love a waterpark? And one in a holiday park right on Australia’s iconic Murray River? It doesn’t get much better than that!
When we told the kids we were headed to a holiday park with a brand new water-park you would have thought we’d told them we were going to Disneyland. The excited squeals said it all. Our kids love the water and LOVE waterparks. Add to that a party with food and animals and entertainment and you have just described the perfect day. And that’s exactly what it was!
We arrived at Maidens Inn the day before the grand opening. It was our youngest child Ben’s 2nd birthday and after a little party in the morning we took the 3 hour drive from Melbourne to Moama. Located on the Murray River in New South Wales, Moama sits opposite the larger, Victorian town and tourist hotspot of Echuca. We checked in and settled in to our cabin in record time before changing in to our swimwear and heading to the water park. And that’s pretty much where we stayed for the rest of the day!
With a huge, tunnel waterslide as well as two smaller ones, a dumping water bucket and several fountains and water soakers, the kids had an absolute ball. Even after the longest time, we had to tear them away for dinner. Fortunately they had the promise of even more waterpark fun the next day, not to mention an awesome party too!
When Discovery Park’s say they are going to have a party, they mean it! Food stands including a sausage sizzle, hot food van with chips, dim sims, potato cakes and chicken nuggets, a coffee van and a gourmet homemade ice-cream van, had our kids not knowing what direction to head first!
There was a petting zoo with goats, sheep, ducks and kittens. So cute and so much fun, especially for the younger kids. The face-paint stand produced a consistent stream of kids walking away with amazingly detailed and creative designs. Our kids were super keen to get their faces painted but just couldn’t stay out of the water long enough to stand waiting for their turn.
The local radio station, Edge 102.5, were there for the party too, broadcasting live. There was a huge turnout, with adults and children everywhere, and with speakers dotted around, the music and up-beat presenters added to the whole atmosphere and party vibe. Anna, our eldest, was interviewed live on the radio. A singer, and music fanatic, this was an absolute highlight for her!
There were tables and chairs all around as well as some shaded areas with picnic blankets laid out offering a welcome respite from the bright, warm sun. In one area there were tables set up lined with bottles of cold water and sunscreen as well as a variety of Discovery Parks merchandise including caps, sunglasses, bouncy balls, beach balls, frisbees, and chalk. Absolutely everything at the event was complimentary and generously provided by Discovery Parks.
Throughout the day we met and talked with many members of the Discovery Parks team. They were all super friendly and so excited about the addition of the new waterpark to what is already a fantastic, family friendly holiday park.
When our kids were not stuffing their faces with party food they spent the whole time playing at the water park, lining up over and over to go down the big water slide. At first I had no intention of joining them in the water, but after some coaxing (ok, not much, I was hot and it looked like fun……) I took Lucy, our 4 year old, down the water slide on my lap. Then I did it again and again and again! It was so much fun!
Even after 3 hours, when the party was over, the food was gone and most people had left, our kids just kept going and going and going. They would occasionally head to the nearby jumping pillow or swimming pool, but it was never long before they were right back at the waterpark!
While at Maidens Inn we stayed in a lovely deluxe lake-front villa. The accommodation and facilities are all top quality and include villas, cabins and powered and non-powered sites, as well as the waterpark, multiple pools, a jumping pillow, playground, a games room, camp kitchen and a kiosk. Located on the picturesque banks of the mighty Murray River, this park really does have it all! You can read our full review of the park, coming soon.
All those plans I had of exploring Echuca and maybe taking a cruise along the Murray never happened. Maidens Inn and their awesome waterpark was all we needed for an amazing, fun-filled weekend. We’ll definitely be back soon for sure, and we’ll make sure we tear the kids away from the water-park for at least an hour or two to check out just what else makes Echuca-Moama such a popular tourist destination!
