When travelling to London, the YHA London Thameside is an excellent budget option for singles, couples and families alike. Having just started our travels as a family of seven with five young children, we were a little apprehensive about staying in a “youth hostel”. We weren’t sure if it would be ideal for kids but as our options were limited, we thought we’d try it out, and we’re so glad we did.
This YHA hostel is clean and modern and is actually ideal for families. We found that these hostels are no longer only suitable for singles, young couples, teenagers or backpackers as maybe they were in the past, but in fact they are actually set up really well for families, especially large families like ours.
We were able to book a 6 bed dorm room which had three sets of bunks and an ensuite and shower room and was actually quite spacious with plenty of space to set up the travel-cot for our seventh member. The room was basic but clean and comfortable and the hostel had all the features of any other hotel, such as 24 hour reception, free wi-fi, guest kitchen, laundry, as well as a cafe, restaurant and bar.
We arrived at YHA London Thameside, much too early for check-in, hoping to be able to store our luggage, and we were greeted by the most wonderful, friendly and accommodating staff member who not only was happy to store our luggage, but arranged for our room to be prepared early for us and invited us to sit in the comfortable cafe\lounge area until our room was ready. As we sat down feeling relieved after a long couple of days of flying, and a walk in the rain to get there, he then appeared with colouring packs for the children and made the whole family a hot chocolate… on the house! We have stayed in many places over the years at all different levels of budget, but never before have we had such amazing, above and beyond treatment, and who would have thought we would find this in a youth hostel?
We enjoyed our stay and enjoyed a good hearty English breakfast in the morning at a reasonable price. We only wished they had availability for a few more nights and we would definitely have stayed longer.
The YHA London Thameside is obviously a budget accommodation for London, but it is really well located, just a short walk to the banks of the Thames, a short bus ride to Tower Bridge, and within 30 minutes via public transport to most of London’s main attractions. So if you’re travelling to London and want budget friendly accommodation and you’re not fussed about a basic room to sleep in, the YHA London Thameside has everything any other hotel has to offer and really great service. We would highly recommend to families with multiple children and we will definitely be returning.
